The shelter is New Beginnings' short-term facility for youth who are in crisis.  Located in a three-story house close to downtown, the shelter provides emergency care for up to twelve youth (male and female) ages 12 through 19.  The maximum length of stay is three weeks.  Referrals are accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Walk-ins are welcome.
Services include:
  • room & board
  • informal individual counseling
  • family mediation
  • an individualized education program
  • referrals to community resources
  • follow-up mediation

The Transitional Living Department provides housing and supportive services to help older adolescents (ages 16-21) develop the attitudes and skills necessary for independent living.  Services are designed for youth who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness.  The transitional Living Department consists of two programs, the Supervised Apartment Program and the Community Living Program.
The Supervised Apartment Program is located in Lewiston and has 24-hour on-site staff supervision.  This program accepts referrals for youth ages 16-20.
The Community Living Program provides housing and case management services in Lewiston, Augusta and the Farmington area.  This program accepts referrals for young adults, ages 18-20, and emancipated minors.
Youth may remain in either of these transitional housing programs for a maximum of 18 months. Follow up counseling is available for up to one year after a youth is discharged from the residential programs.
Referrals may be made Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm

The Outreach program has offices in downtown Lewiston and Farmington and works with youth ages 14-21 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
The Lewiston office has a drop-in center that is open Monday-Friday afternoons providing meals, information and referrals, supplies and clothing, and group activities.  The workers also make contact with youth through street outreach in the downtown neighborhoods.
Services include:
  • case management
  • assistance with placements and housing needs
  • referrals to other community resources.

HIV PREVENTION, RESEARCH, and TRAINING

The HIV Prevention Program provides effective, skills-based education to youth in all of the agency's programs to help them to stay healthy and reduce their risk for HIV infection. Youth are trained to serve as HIV educators with their peers.
Under contract with the Maine Department of Education, New Beginnings coordinates HIV training and education for staff of agencies serving high-risk youth across the state.  Research and evaluation projects support the development of innovative programming that promotes the goal of healthy youth development.
